Elfen Lied is a good anime.

The setting is one of institutionalized inhuman experiments and of supernatural abilities. The base theme is fights with gore (explicit in blood and dismanteling) and psychological trauma. The larger part of the anime, based on these, is a more mellow everyday life in that setting.
