Monday Night Combat โ€“ First Thoughts

So, Steam had a Free Weekend for the indie game Monday Night Combat. Always wanted to try it, with its interesting gameplay and style. Now I had a chance to.

At first, in the first scenes, first round, I was often assassinated (meele insta-kill), which made a bit frustrating and not fun at all. After a while though, I managed to even escape the assassins and kill them instead. Then it became quite fun.

The atmosphere is well made, a real entertainment arena fun environment. I can imagine the gameplay getting a bit boring after a while though. Also, although I like the avatar-level-progessions per round (much like W:ET does it) I think it starts out way to weak. But upgrading/leveling up does not take too long, and then you can prioritize on what is important to you first.

There are several classes available. You start with a tutorial of the assault class, so you at least know a little bit about the game before joining a match. When I tried another/other classes the first time it was really frustrating. Just like the first round of playing at all. Iโ€™d probably just have to get to know them, and get to know their abilities better and when and how to use them.

What I donโ€™t like though is the console-ish menu. Meh ๐Ÿ™ Like so many games nowadays. Usability could have been a lot better.

Itโ€™s pretty much a game for in-between. Fun for some matches, or more. Like many other MP games I can imagine it being quite fun with some teamplay and tactics. But where to find that โ€ฆ ๐Ÿ™‚

When I tried to play it again in the evening, I was not able to find a server I could not connect to. It seems not enough servers were/are online for all the people trying it out this weekend.
